18-year-old Shweta Katti has just received the scholarship to attend Bard College — studying psychology. The story for this young girl involves poverty, resilience, and residency above a brothel. Growing up, she was not only forced to endure sexual abuse, but men would frequently mistake her for one of the sex workers right below her small home.
“There were men who used to ask me, ‘Do you want to sleep with me?'” Katti said.
Despite living in a red-light area in Mumbai, Katti has been a part of Kranti, an organization devoted to empowering women in such districts, and Newsweek also recently named her one of 25 women to watch under age 25. Through these astounding accomplishments, she’s been able to escape a life many deem to be unfortunate and permanent.
